Serving and Learning Together (SALT) is a year-long, cross-cultural service experience. Though SALT, Christian young adults from Canada and the U.S. serve internationally in a wide variety of positions in fields like education, agriculture, health care, information technology, peace and more!

During their assignments SALTers are immersed in another culture, living with host families or communal settings such as dormitories or teacher housing in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and Central America and the Middle East.

By living and serving in a new setting, SALTers

2] Help foster international goodwill and understanding
3] Gain personal experience with, and commitment to, the global church

Applications are accepted year-round, but only those received before February 15 are guaranteed to be considered for a placement in the same year. The earlier we receive your application, the greater your chances of being placed.

We start the placement process each January and finish in late May.

SALTers are asked to fundraise a minimum contribution due before the beginning of the SALT term in August. MCC then covers all travel, food & lodging, full medical insurance and can assist with student loan payments during service. MCC also provides a small stipend and worker renewal funds to assist with any personal expenses during your term. We strongly believe that finances should not deter you from serving. If you are not able to raise the minimum amount, please contact us to discuss your options.

If planning to use SALT as an internship/practicum, you must inform the SALT Coordinator of this intention during the application process to ensure we can meet the requirements of your educational institution. It is your responsibility to ensure SALT meets the requirements of your program before accepting an assignment.

Each assignment description varies in work and responsibility.

While we do our best to determine and outline job responsibilities with our local partners, duties may change or be refined over time in communication with supervisors to meet the ongoing dynamics and needs within a local context. As such, the greatest characteristics a participant can bring to an assignment are adaptability, flexibility, patience, a willingness to get your hands dirty, and humility to complete even mundane tasks.
