|Winnipeg is a city of approximately 650,000 located on the Red River, 108 km's north of the US border. Being near the center of Canada, it is a major transportation center. The city's population is fairly diverse, representing people from many different cultures. Most of the people are English speaking with French, Filipino and Chinese being other predominant languages. There are about 65,000 First Nations people living in Winnipeg.
There are almost 50 Mennonite churches in Winnipeg, which is home to about 30,000 Mennonites. Winnipeg has two large public liberal arts universities and a Mennonite university (Canadian Mennonite University). There are also two Mennonite private high schools.
Winnipeg temperatures can range from 40°C (104°F) in summer to -45°C (-49°F) in winter, with average summer temperatures around 25.4°C (77.7°F) and average winter temperatures around -12.9°C (8.8°F).

Customer service experience in either the food service or retail industries.

|Sam’s Place is seeking a mature, responsible, dynamic individual who is interested in assisting with operational tasks necessary to the running of our café. This is a 16-week term position.
Sam’s Place is a café, shop, and venue in the Chalmers/Elmwood neighborhood. Sam’s Place is a Social Enterprise that is owned by Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. It runs a Youth and Young Adult Employable Skills Program that provides opportunity for youth and young adults, often facing barriers, to develop employable skills and gain experience for their future in the work force. Sam’s Place is growing their retail offerings by adding additional products on-top of a robust collection of used books, these include Fair Trade foods and goods, and locally made food and goods.
The Operations Assistant (OA) would provide quality support to the Sam’s Place Manager in the operating of the café. The Operations Assistant would be trained to manage the retail sales of used books and other Fair Trade and Locally Made products, through both our eCommerce Platform and on our café floor (dependent on Covid-19 restrictions). The OA will become familiar with the backend of our Point of Sale system, our eCommerce platform, and our inventory system. Support may also be needed in planning, event, and promotion as directed by the Sam’s Place Manager. The successful candidate will be fully trained in the day-to-day tasks of running the café, in all areas; which could include supervising and/or training volunteers in the café, in all areas.
The Sam’s Place Operations Assistant will be required to work 30-hours a week Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and potentially some odd evenings for events.
|Support the Sam’s Place Manager with operational tasks.
Organize and manage used book inventory. This includes implementing a plan for accepting book donations that incorporates participants from the Sam’s Place Youth Program, negotiating and making appointments with buyers, and creating a storage plan that includes recycling stock.
Promote retail offerings through social media platforms.
Organize, catalogue, and showcase retail items on both the café floor and the eCommerce platform.
Build and maintain relationships with makers, wholesalers, and buyers.
Fulfill retail orders for pick-up and delivery.
Assist with events, planning, and promotion where necessary.
Assist with supervising the café floor and performing supervisor duties where necessary.
Lead and teach volunteers and program participants where necessary.
Provide support to the café where necessary.
Able to stay on feet all day.
Able to carry and move around inventory, including boxes of books.
Sam’s Place follows all government regulations as well as guidelines from the WRHA Food Inspector. The successful candidate will receive training as it relates to keeping themselves and other staff, volunteers, and customers safe. Regular, stringent cleaning will be performed, and PPE will be worn as needed.
