Qualifications:
Must be between 15 and 30 years of age.
Must be available 30 hours a week between Monday to Friday (some Mondays and Saturdays) until end of contract.
Experience working in a commercial kitchen that provides meal service in some context.
Experience working with commercial grade kitchen equipment.
Experience running a kitchen line.  
Ability to prepare food portions for the line.
Effective time management and administrative skills.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Experience working in a team dynamic with a variety of different personalities/working styles.
Experience making breads, soups, and sauces an asset.
Experience with pull, par lists, and inventory management an asset.
Experience working with pastry an asset.
Experience working with volunteers an asset.
Food Handler’s Certificate an asset.
Sam’s Place is seeking a mature, responsible, and hardworking individual to assist our Food Services Manager for the summer as part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program. This is a 16-week term position.

Sam’s Place is a café, shop, and venue in the Chalmers/Elmwood neighborhood. Sam’s Place is a social enterprise that is owned by Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba. It runs a Youth and Young Adult Employable Skills Program that provides opportunity for youth and young adults, often facing barriers, to develop employable skills and gain experience for their future in the work force.

The Food Services Manager Assistant would aid the Food Services Manager in the operation of the Sam’s Place kitchen. They would provide support in making breads, pastries, soups, fillings, and spreads. They would also prepare food portions for the line and run the line to fulfil customer orders. The FSM Assistant will maintain cleanliness and organization in both the kitchen and back pantry. They may also provide training and supervision to kitchen volunteers. The FSM Assistant will oversee the kitchen when the Food Services Manager is away.

The Food Services Manager Assistant will be required to work 30 hours a week, typically on Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and some Mondays or Saturdays when needed. They may also work outside of café hours to fulfill catering orders (pending restrictions).
 
Make breads, soups, spreads, and desserts with local ingredients.
Prep and portion ingredients and meal components for the kitchen line.
Run the kitchen line and prepare takeout, delivery, and dine-in orders for customers (health restrictions permitting).
Practice First-in-First-Out, while organizing pantry, fridges, and freezers.
Assist Food Services Manager with placing orders with suppliers.
Assist Food Services Manager with inventory and pull and par lists.
Maintain the Sam’s Place garden, including harvesting vegetables and fruits for use in recipes.
Fulfill daily required kitchen cleaning as well as weekly equipment cleaning tasks.
Wash dishes as needed.
Open and close kitchen daily.
Run the kitchen when Food Services Manager is away.
Supervise and train other volunteers in the kitchen if needed.
Assist in updating training materials if needed.
Other daily kitchen tasks as assigned.
Physical Demand:
Able to stay on feet all day.
Able to work with hot items.
Covid-19 Restrictions:
Sam’s Place follows all government regulations as well as guidelines from the WRHA Food Inspector as it relates to Covid-19. The successful candidate will receive training as it relates to keeping themselves and other staff, volunteers, and customers safe. Regular, stringent cleaning will be performed, and PPE will be worn as needed.
