  • Minimum High School Diploma
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 100 lbs).
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English.
  • Retail or customer service experience is an asset.
  • Interest in furniture and furniture repair and upcycling skills are an asset.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely and efficient manner whilst maintaining attention to deal with cleaning and quality checks.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of the Shop Manager.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, willing and able to work & relate with a variety of people; friendly, outgoing and appreciative of both volunteers and customers.
  • Ability to practice flexibility and work collaboratively as a team.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Satisfactory criminal record clearance.
  • Valid BC Driver's licence accompanied by a clean driving record.
  • Commitment to wearing steel-toed shoes and proper work gloves and any other PPE as required.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with one of MCC’s thrift shops. We are a non-profit organization with all proceeds from our stores used to support the relief, development, social justice and peace work of MCC, both locally as well as globally. At our Kelowna location last year alone, we turned unwanted items of clothing, furniture, household items etc into approximately $700,000 in sales. This position will allow you to be involved with the shipping and receiving of goods, both inside the shop and on the truck, as well as other items as required. A driver’s licence and clean abstract is required as the position will require occasionally driving of a 1-ton cube. We are looking for someone with a positive attitude, great work ethic and a passion for our purpose here at MCC Kelowna Thrift. This is a casual hourly position and requires availability to work 2-3 days/week. Complex-needs population; Physically demanding work
• Receiving donations at the drop-off area, organizing them and transferring them to the appropriate location. Using discretion on when to say no to receiving product. Treating donors and customers with respect.
• Working as a driver/swamper on a 1 ton cube truck for the purpose of picking up and delivering goods
• Assisting with pricing and merchandizing of furniture items
• Identify high value items that are received from donors and place them aside for further research.
• Follow processes for recycling and disposal process of product that will not be sold.
• Assist customers with loading furniture purchases checking for proper sales documentation.
• Assist in the cleaning, pricing and merchandising of furniture, as needed.
• Maintain organization of the furniture pricing room as well as the sales floor.
• Assist customers on the sales floor, including operating the cash register when needed.
• Wear steel-toed shoes and work gloves as well as any other PPE as required while on the job.
• Abide by WHIMIS standards within all job responsibilities.
• Answer inquiries about MCC’s beliefs and values from volunteers, constituency who support MCC and the general public.
• Assist in resolving any conflicts arising with customers or volunteers in a manner that reflects respect, careful listening and peaceful resolution.
• Through networking, engaging the local community church to become actively involved in the work of MCC.
• Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those we serve, including the staff, volunteers and customers.
• Contribute to the shaping of a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values.
• Participate in biblically based morning devotions/prayer time. Willingness to lead on a rotating basis.

• Perform other duties, as required.

The position requires working in a comfortable but fast-paced retail shop / shipping & receiving environment and requires spending a significant portion of time on one's feet. This position also involves working outside in various weather conditions while unloading and loading furniture. This position further requires the ability to constantly respond "positively" to the demands/requests from customers/donors. From time to time there is also the need to deal with drug-addicted and/or street-involved persons.

This position involves the constant handling of used goods and lifting/moving of objects of up to 100 lbs; significant amounts of heavy lifting of furniture are included in this role. Steel toe shoes are required.
