Qualifications:
  • Minimum High School Diploma
  • Ability to work with one's hands.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English.
  • Retail or customer service experience is an asset.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and willing to take initiative, while at the same time responding to the direction of the Shop Manager.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, willing and able to work & relate with a variety of people; friendly, outgoing and appreciative of both volunteers and customers.
  • Ability to practice flexibility and work collaboratively as a team.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic handi-man and furniture repair skills are an asset.
  • Satisfactory criminal record clearance.
  • Valid BC Driver's licence accompanied by a clean driving record.
  • Commitment to wearing steel-toed boots and proper work gloves.
  • Ability to reflect and express Anabaptist beliefs and the value of service.

The Surrey MCC Thrift Shop is actively engaged in receiving and selling used clothing, furniture, small appliances, housewares, books, toys, jewellery and collectibles with all proceeds designated to support the relief, development, social justice and peace work of Mennonite Central Committee. Thrift Shops make a valuable contribution to good stewardship and a healthy environment by recycling items that might otherwise be thrown away. In addition, they provide a sense of community to volunteers and the people we serve through social interaction in a caring community.

This assignment involves providing support to the receiving and processing of donations in-Shop, pick-up and delivery of donated items, and retail floor operations of the shop. This position requires living out your faith by serving others and advancing the mission of MCC as one relates to volunteers, customers, staff and donors. This position reports to the Shop Manager.

This position is available on a full-time 3 Month Contract (40 hours per week) requiring full availability Monday – Saturday, with a possibility of extension. Only those candidates who are legally eligible to work in Canada should apply.
Complex-needs population; Physically demanding work
Duties:
• Receiving donations at the drop-off area, organizing them and transferring them to the appropriate location. Using discretion on when to say no to receiving product. Treating donors and customers with respect.
• Driving and/or working as a swamper on a 1 ton cube truck for the purpose of picking up and delivering goods.
• Oversee the training and shifts of the volunteers in the receiving area, providing support where necessary.
• Identify high value items that are received from donors and place them aside for further research.
• Take leadership in the recycling and disposal process of product that will not be sold.
• Assist customers with loading purchases checking for proper sales documentation.
• Assist in the cleaning and repair of furniture, as needed.
• Assist with pre-sorting and processing of donated goods, including testing of electronics.
• Maintain organization of the shipping/receiving area as well as the sales floor.
• Assist customers on the sales floor including operating the cash register.
• Wear steel-toed boots and work gloves while on the job.
• Abide by WHIMIS standards within all job responsibilities.
• Answer inquiries about MCC’s beliefs and values from volunteers, constituency who support MCC and the general public.
• Assist in resolving any conflicts arising with customers or volunteers in a manner that reflects respect, careful listening and peaceful resolution.
• Through networking, engaging the local community church to become actively involved in the work of MCC.
• Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those we serve, including the staff, volunteers and customers.
• Contribute to the shaping of a positive workplace culture based on Christian beliefs and values.
• Participate in biblically based morning devotions/prayer time. Willingness to lead on a rotating basis.
