Harlan,Knott and McDowell Counties are mountainous coal-mining counties in southeastern Kentucky. Like most coal-mining counties of Appalachia, these counties are economically distressed: unemployment soars at five times the national average and salaries are a fraction of more prosperous regions. USDA studies have identified these counties as critical in terms of sub-standard housing and some even lack in basic infrastructures of roads sewers or adequate water supplies.

  • A desire to learn and understand poverty issues in Appalachia
  • A willingness to facilitate or assist in evening sessions
  • A willingness to work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds as well as other staff
  • A willingness to learn about construction tools and materials along with organization of tool and material inventories
  • An ability or willingness to learn how to perform basic home repairs and improvements safely and help unskilled volunteers learn, too
  • Ability or willingness to lead or give directions on the job site as directed by the location coordinators 
  • Patience and stamina required
  • Driver's license preferred

SWAP (Sharing With Appalachian People) provides mission/service/learning opportunities for young people and adults, mainly through the summer months. Primary focus of SWAP is housing repair low-income individuals and families who do not qualify for other low-cost housing programs, and supporting faith-sharing, communication and understanding between volunteers and local residents.

This ten week assignment includes a level of interaction with adult and youth groups, youth sponsors and local SWAP clients that provides opportunity to explore new cultures and stretch one's faith and understanding of Christ's call to serve others.

The group of staff will be made up of persons 19 years of age older with willingness and desire to serve and lead others.

Some of your time will be given to visit the client's homes beforehand to meet with the clients. While there, instructions will be given as to what work will be done, how to go about getting work completed along with tools and materials needed for the job. Ongoing oversight will be provided by the location coordinators.
 
Duties:
- Make sure all materials and tools are available daily on site as needed.

- Responsible for requesting any future materials and tools so that they will be available on
site when needed. This will provide smooth work flow for clients and volunteers.

- Maintain daily and open communication with the Location Coordinator, other job site
coordinators, the volunteer adult group leader along with the homeowner to ensure
smooth delivery of service to the job

- Organize, coordinate and maintain tools and materials used by SWAP to ensure
minimum of waste and tool loss/breakage; work with the volunteers to ensure a clean
safe work site; transport all items and materials to and from the job site, including building
refuse, all as advised by the location coordinator

- Oversee work projects with the volunteers that come to serve

- Be conscientious and respectful in conduct and communication with client's. co-workers
and volunteers

- Facilitate or assist with evening sessions and worship together with the SWAP staff
