  • BA or BS required, or equivalent experience, MA is desirable
  • Strong oral and written English communication skills including ability to articulate theological foundation for MCC work; additional Spanish fluency preferred

The regional Executive Director is responsible to the West Coast MCC Board of Directors and works under the guidance of the MCC U.S. Executive Director and the MCCs in the U.S. Covenant. The director is responsible for promoting and encouraging support of MCC; for giving leadership and vision to MCC programs within the region; and for strengthening relationships between MCC and MCC's sponsoring denominations represented with the Region's constituency. The position requires considerable cooperation and coordination with many MCC/MCC U.S. departments. The director participates in discussions involving MCC policy, structure and vision.

Travel is required, at times extensively, but primarily within the region and to the Akron, Pennsylvania office for administrative meetings. Travel away from home averages about 50 to 60 nights away from home per year.

The current West Coast MCC staff includes thirteen other persons in addition to the director. These include staff involved in Reedley office work, resource development, material resources, and programs. The regional director’s job is noteworthy for the variety it entails. The position envelops a rainbow of contacts including fellow MCC staff, board, diverse constituents and community people. The position includes involvement in everything from fundraising to program development to informal conversations to policy discussions.

• Administration/Supervision (25%)
• Serve as executive staff member to the West Coast Board reporting to the West Coast MCC Board and MCC U.S. Board.
• Provide administrative oversight and management of the West Coast office.
• Lead staff in staying grounded in MCC’s mission to share God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ.
• Represent West Coast MCC concerns in various MCC and MCC U.S. discussions.
• Coordinate goal setting and evaluation.
• Supervise West Coast MCC staff and ensure alignment with MCC Networks.
• Implement human resources practices that comply within legal and relevant regulatory requirements.
• Write necessary reports and maintain correspondence.

Relationship building and networking (20%)
• Promote and interpret MCC mission and ministry through formal and informal contacts and public presentations.
• Maintain solid relationships with board members, conference leaders and congregations.
• Be available for speaking engagements.
• Ensure that MCC alumni and partners are effectively integrated within the West Coast constituency.
• Establish effective ways of communicating MCC’s mission and ministry within the West Coast constituency.
• Coordinate with HR to be aware of and respectful to California’s unique regulatory environment.

Program planning and budget (20%)
• Ensure coordination and supervision of regional programs.
• Ensure the investigation of new program possibilities.
• Helpfully relate to various MCC programs within the region.
• Coordinate effective ways to meet peace and justice concerns on the West Coast.
• Encourage West Coast staff to work responsibly within MCC U.S. program and support services networks.

Fundraising/development (35%)
• Clearly present and articulate MCC’s mission, vision and “case for support” in ways that enthuse and energize constituents.
• As directed by staff, build and maintain relationships with selected major donors and other key stakeholders, including solicitation of their gifts and support.
• Encourage the organization to embrace a “culture of philanthropy,” including regular, generous giving of board and staff.
• Relate to regional MCC entities which support MCC such as thrift shops and relief sales.
• Coordinate effective ways of raising material resources for MCC
• Coordinate effective ways of encouraging people to consider and enter MCC service.
• Policy Interpretation.

Other duties as assigned

This position requires the incumbent to initiate and maintain extensive contact with West Coast constituency, staff, board and partners in the fulfillment of the MCC mission, vision, principles and program priorities, fully collaborating with the other parts of MCC as addressed in the MCCs in the U.S. Covenant.

The Executive Director is responsible for the supervision and regular evaluation of West Coast regional staff and programs.

The Executive Director must have the ability to facilitate cooperative efforts within a very diverse constituency and within the West Coast MCC’s Mission and Core Values. This position requires flexibility, sensitivity, and leadership to bring together staff and constituents of varying theological and cultural backgrounds. This position also requires the ability to work within the structures of regions and provinces, MCC U.S. and MCC Shared Programs.

The Executive Director role requires a self-starter, motivational leader, and team player that can work independently and within larger MCC systems and constituency networks.

End Result
This position primarily serves the board, staff, and the West Coast constituency as well as the larger MCC organization. Decisions are made in consultation with the West Coast board and MCC U.S. leaders, impacting leaders, impacting the West Coast region and the broader MCC organization.
